How to Care for an Ovation Guitar: Bowl and Top

Short answer: Ovation guitars use a synthetic rounded back that resists humidity better than all-wood bodies, but the top is still wood and needs normal acoustic-guitar care. Wipe the bowl and top with a soft dry cloth after playing, keep the guitar in a well-fitted case, and control indoor humidity so the top does not dry out. Keep the electronics clean, change the battery when needed, and use strings that fit the instrument. Avoid solvents, rapid temperature swings, and leaving the guitar near heaters or vents.

What Makes Ovation Care Different?

An Ovation guitar combines very different materials. Most models have a rounded synthetic back, usually called the bowl, and a wood soundboard on top. Because the soundboard is the part of the instrument that responds directly to the strings, it needs the same protection as the top of any solid-wood acoustic guitar. The bowl is more tolerant of humidity, but that does not make the whole guitar immune to dry air.

Care for an Ovation therefore splits into several jobs: keep the bowl clean, keep the top safe and at a stable humidity, and keep the electronics and hardware working. If you already know how to care for a conventional acoustic, most of the top-related advice carries over. The difference is the bowl and how it reacts to cleaning and climate.

Caring for the Synthetic Bowl

The synthetic bowl does not show humidity cracks the way a wooden back does, and it does not need wood polish or wax. A soft dry cloth is the main cleaning tool. After a session, wipe the bowl to remove fingerprints and dust. For a stickier spot, a cloth barely dampened with water works well. Let the bowl dry before you put the guitar away.

Do not use alcohol, acetone, furniture polish, or abrasive pads on the bowl or on the top. These can soften the finish or leave a cloudy haze. Also be careful with any damp cloth near the soundhole, because moisture can reach the electronics and the bridge plate. For general finish guidance, see how to clean and polish a guitar finish.

  • Use a soft cotton or microfiber cloth.
  • Use plain water for stubborn marks, then dry the bowl.
  • Avoid solvents, polishes, waxes, and abrasive pads.

Caring for the Solid Wood Top

The wood top is the voice of the guitar. According to C.F. Martin's wood guide, the top, or soundboard, plays one of the biggest roles in an acoustic guitar's voice. It responds directly to the strings through the bridge, helping shape volume, attack, dynamic range, and tonal balance. That means keeping the top clean is not just cosmetic. Wipe the top from the bridge toward the neck after playing, especially if you sweat on it.

Use a dry or only slightly damp cloth and avoid leaving water on the finish. Skip furniture polish and most guitar polishes with silicone or wax, because buildup can make future cleaning harder. The material itself matters too, and the difference between a solid top and a laminated top is worth knowing as you care for it. See solid top versus laminated top for that comparison.

Top cracks are usually caused by dryness. A small hairline crack can sometimes be repaired, but it should be done by someone who works with acoustic guitars. Do not try to force glue into a crack from the outside, because the bracing underneath is part of the repair. If you notice a crack, keep the humidity stable and read about cracks in the top wood before acting.

Humidity and Temperature

Humidity is the biggest issue for any solid-top guitar, and an Ovation is no exception. The synthetic bowl will not swell, split, or dry out the way wood does, but the top, neck, bridge, and glue joints are still wood. Keeping the guitar in a room that feels comfortable for people is the simplest plan: not too dry, not damp.

If your home gets very dry in winter, use a room humidifier or a case humidifier. Put the guitar in its case when you are not playing, and place the humidifier inside the case if the case seals well. Always check that the humidifier is not dripping directly on the top. See how to use a guitar humidifier and how to store guitars safely at home for practical details.

Keep the guitar away from radiators, heating vents, direct sunlight, and cold drafts. Let a cold guitar warm up in its case before you open it. Rapid temperature change can stress the finish and joints, even though the bowl itself is stable.

Electronics and Hardware

Most Ovation models are acoustic-electric, and their preamps are part of the care routine. After playing, wipe the controls and the output jack with a dry cloth. If the on-board tuner dims or the output gets weak, replace the battery before you assume the guitar has a wiring problem. For long storage, remove the battery to prevent corrosion. The process is outlined in how to replace the battery in an acoustic-electric guitar.

As with other acoustic-electric guitars, the preamp may have volume, tone, phase, and tuner controls. The C.F. Martin electronics guide shows similar controls on common systems, and the same logic applies: keep the battery compartment clean, mute the signal when tuning, and use the phase switch only when you need to reduce feedback.

Tuning machines on an Ovation need the same attention as on other acoustics. Keep the posts clean, avoid overtightening, and lubricate only if they feel rough. See how to clean and lubricate guitar tuning machines.

Strings and Restringing

Strings are the first point of contact between your hands and the guitar's voice. When they sound dull or feel rough, change them. Treated strings can resist sweat, moisture, and corrosion, which is useful if you play often. C.F. Martin's string guide describes coated and treated strings as a way to extend string life without adding a heavy coating.

Restring an acoustic guitar the same way you would any steel-string instrument: do not remove all the strings at once if you want to keep tension on the neck, wind neatly around the post, and make sure the ball ends seat against the bridge. The full process is in how to restring an acoustic guitar.

Do not clean the top while the strings are off by flooding it with liquid. The bridge plate and the glue joints under the top are sensitive to moisture. If the strings are dirty, replace them instead of trying to make old strings shine.

Cases and Setup Checkups

The round bowl changes how the guitar sits in a case. A generic flat-back case may not support the bowl properly, and a soft gig bag can allow the guitar to shift. A case made for the Ovation body shape will support the bowl and the neck. This is the same logic a maker such as Ibanez uses when it warns against generic fit-all cases: the case should be designed for the instrument inside it.

Get the setup checked when the guitar is hard to play or after a major season change. The truss rod, nut, saddle, and action all affect how the guitar feels. If you know how to use them, you can adjust the truss rod yourself, but a full setup is often easier to leave to a technician. See how to set up an acoustic guitar and truss rod adjustment.

Finally, keep an eye on the body joint, the bridge, and the tuners. The bowl is tough, but the joints that attach it to the top are woodworking details and need the same stable environment as the top.

Questions

Is an Ovation more resistant to humidity than a normal acoustic guitar?

The synthetic bowl is more stable in humidity than wooden back and sides, but the top is still wood. Keep the whole guitar in moderate humidity to protect the top, neck, bridge, and glue joints.

Can I use furniture polish on the bowl?

No. Avoid polish, wax, and solvents on the synthetic bowl. A soft dry cloth is enough for dust and fingerprints, and a slightly damp cloth can clean stubborn marks without dulling the finish.

Can I use guitar polish on the solid wood top?

Use little or no polish. A dry cloth removes sweat, and a slightly damp cloth can clean sticky spots. If you choose a cleaner made specifically for guitar finishes, apply it sparingly and never let liquid sit on the wood.

Should I loosen the strings when storing the guitar?

There is no need to loosen all strings for normal storage. Keeping the guitar in a case with stable humidity matters more. If you plan to store it for a long time, you can lower the tension slightly, but do not leave it completely slack.

How often should I change the battery in the preamp?

Change the battery when the tuner dims or the output weakens, and remove it for long storage. There is no fixed schedule; check it regularly along with the rest of the electronics.

What should I do if the top cracks?

Stop playing, keep the humidity stable, and take the guitar to a repair professional. Do not try to fill or glue a crack yourself, because the bracing inside the guitar is part of the repair.

Is a hard case necessary for an Ovation?

A fitted hard case gives the best protection, but any case that supports the Ovation body shape is better than leaving the guitar on a stand. A generic fit-all case may not cradle the round bowl correctly.
